“Our Place” Place-based Education Project

Agenda for 6/17/2009
(9 a.m.-3:00 p.m.)

1. Introductions (9 a.m.)- Who are you and what do you hope to learn today?
2. Pre-test- on the basics of place-based education (self-grade)
3. PowerPoint Presentation- “What is Place-based Education (PBE)?”
4. Discussion- of PowerPoint information, Hoosier Environmental
Council (HEC) and paperwork(Jim Myers), and David Sobel’s book
Place-Based Education: Connecting Classrooms & Communities(share your
favorite story or quote from the book)
5. Resources- web sites will be shared; books will include The Kid’s
Guide to Social Action by Barbara A. Lewis, and How to Change the
World-Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas by David
Bornstein; copies of HEC Monitors; United Streaming video “The
Yellow Hat: The Health of the Planet and Its People”
6. Break- a 15 minute working break to look at resources and share
7. PowerPoint Presentation- “Inquiry in the Classroom”
8. Computer Time (30 minutes)- look at academic standards and
resources for possible “Our Place” class activities and projects
9. Share with Group- discuss possible academic standards that you
could cover; the mentor teacher and resource person will help guide
you and answer your questions
10. PowerPoint Presentation- “Student Voice and Community Involvement”
11. Lunch Break (12 noon)- catered lunch allowing teachers to continue
to work, discuss, research, interact, and ask questions
12. Discussion (1 p.m.)- group discusses ideas to insure student voice
in their project, and ideas to include family and community members
13. Project Rubric: introduction of the HEC “Our Place” Project Rubric
14. Presentation of “Our Place” Projects – the group will brainstorm
ideas for presenting students’ final projects to the community
15. Break- 15 minutes
16. Work Time- continue working on your project; talk to others; use
resources; bounce ideas off the resource person, mentor teacher, etc.
17. Introduction of additional resource people
18. Post-test- (2:30 p.m.) same questions as the pre-test and will be
self-graded
19. Wrap Up- schedule resource person’s phone conference/initial
meeting; question/answer time
20. Adjourn at 3:00 p.m.
